
The first day of action at the ‘World Boxing Cup – Brazil 2026, Foz Do Iguaça’ saw 54 bouts take place across two sessions of boxing at the Rafain Palace Hotel & Convention Centre.
Nearly 400 men and women from 50 countries are taking part in the competition which is the first World Boxing Cup of the 2026 series.
Nations that enjoyed success on first day included Italy and Turkiye which both notched up five victories. Boxers from Venezuela recorded four wins, while Kazakhstan, Canada, Dominican Republic and the home nation, Brazil, all won three times.
Eye-catching performances on the day included a victory in the men’s lightweight category (M60kg) by Paris Olympian, Jude Gallagher, who secured a 5-0 win over Kazakhstan’s Zhanseri Kosherbayev.
In the men’s heavyweight division (M90kg) Spain’s Emmanuel Reyes scored a 4:1 points win over Malachi George of the USA in a tough first round battle.
The women’s competition saw victories for 2020 Olympic champion, Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkiye at light middleweight (W70kg) and Norway’s Suvinna Hofstad (W75kg), who won three World Boxing Cup events last year and opened her 2026 campaign with a third round stoppage of Elenoa Lilio of New Zealand.

Day two of competition will see Uzbekistan’s world ranked number two, Javokhir Zokirov, make his debut in the competition at super-heavyweight (M90kg+) along with the number one ranked female boxer in the world, Julia Szeremeta of Poland who will begin her campaign in the women’s featherweight (W57kg) division.
