Fifteen countries secured victory on day two of boxing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games at the Scottish Exhibition Campus (SEC) in Glasgow which featured action in the men’s lightweight (M60kg) and light-heavyweight (M80kg) categories.
The two sessions were book-ended by more mixed results for the host nation with a win and a loss. In the first bout of the day, Nicholas Devlin, who hails from East Kilbride in Glasgow, made an impressive debut in the competition with a unanimous victory over New Zealand’s Finbar O’Sullivan at lightweight (M60kg).
But the final bout of the day saw one of Scotland’s biggest medal hopes, Alan Perrie, exit the competition in a loss to Paul Trainor of Australia.
After a competitive first round, Perrie was bleeding heavily and, following a series of blows from Trainor, the referee stepped-in in round two to halt the contest on the grounds of injury and declare Trainor the winner.
In between times, the action provided a great showcase for the strength in depth that exists in international boxing with wins in the early session for boxers from Botswana, Antigua, Seychelles and Tonga.
Two of most impressive performances came from India’s Sachin Sachin, who secured a split decision (4:1) victory over Keoma Al-Ahmadieh of Canada in an absorbing lightweight (M60kg) contest, and Canadian light-heavyweight (M80kg), Joshua Ofori, who looked ominous in stopping his Sri Lankan opponent in less than a round.
Ofori is one Team Canada’s biggest medal hopes and will meet Aminiasi Saritibau of Fiji in the round of 16.
The evening session opened with an all-African affair that saw Zambia’s Albert Ungulube record a unanimous win over Ibrahim Kemis of Uganda and Pakistan’s Qudrat Ullah outpoint Jone Davule from Fiji.
A timing error by the Trinidad and Tobago team meant Anthony Joseph did not appear for his lightweight clash with Tryagain Morning Ndevelo from Namibia who was awarded a walkover and a place in the round of 16.
The best performance of the night came from Wales’s 2024 U19 World Boxing Champion, Daniel Pitt, who impressed as he eased to a 5:0 unanimous victory over Dee Ioapo of Samoa. He will face Kua Ganua Mua from Papua New Guinea in the last 16 on Monday.
