The World Boxing U19 Championships got underway with 18 bouts contested across two rings on Friday night.
The competition’s first fight was between Ireland’s Lee Largey Snoddon and Australia’s David Mlacic. The men’s 55kg bout was won by the Irishman with a 4:1 split decision that sees him move on to the round of 32.
He’ll be joined in the next round by China’s Huang Wenxuan, who got the better of Turkmenistan’s Abdyrasul Arslanov with a confident 5:0 victory.
In the women’s 60kg, Uzbekistan are represented by multiple Asian Champion Sevara Mamatova who bested Brooke Miller from New Zealand with a 5:0 unanimous decision.
Ukraine’s Viktoriia Rosetska delivered a clinical performance to defeat Lithuania’s Karolina Radziunaite via RSC. The bout was stopped in round two following three knockdowns.
The other weight category in action on day one was the men’s 90kg+. The super heavyweight category lived up to its name, with four stoppages from eight bouts. One of these bouts, however, was nail-bitingly close with Azerbaijan’s Safdar Mammadzada securing a 3:2 split decision victory against Belarus’ Kiryl Zhukouski.
Every single bout of the competition will be livestreamed on World Boxing TV. Subscriptions cost $5.99 per month and will include every session live with English and Russian commentary from the semi-finals onwards.
