The boxing action continued yesterday with the first final of the tournament taking place alongside six semi-final bouts.
In the Women’s 60kg final, Kellie Harrington of Ireland became a two-time champion, following her win in Tokyo. The Irish boxer defeated China’s Wenlu Yang, who leaves with a silver medal, by a 4:1 split decision victory.
Next up was the Men’s 71kg semi-finals, the first of which saw Uzbekistan’s Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev defeat USA’s Omari Jones via a 3:2 split decision. The Uzbek boxer is set to face the winner of the other semi-final, Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez of Mexico, who got the better of Great Britain’s Lewis Richardson in another close fight, with a 3:2 split decision.
Moving on to the Women’s 50kg semi-final, number one seed Yu Wu of China got a decisive win against Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay. Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu, who won silver in Tokyo, will meet Wu in the final having dispatched of Aira Villegas off the Philippines.
The last semi-finals of the day were in the Women’s 66kg, where Algeria’s Imane Khelif secured a unanimous decision victory over Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng. Facing the Algerian in the final is the two-seed, China’s Liu Yang, who earned a 4:1 decision over Chinese Taipei’s Nien Chin Chen.
Today’s action will see four semi-final bouts across the Women’s 57kg and Men’s 92+kg, alongside the final of the Men’s 63.5kg and Men’s 80kg.
