July 19, 2024

The third World Boxing Cup event of the year will be held at the UG Arena, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 23-26 September 2024.

The four-day competition is the first World Boxing Cup event to be held in Asia and is being hosted by the Mongolian Boxing Federation and World Boxing.

The World Boxing Cup is a new annual competition series in which elite male and female boxers accrue ranking points over several stages of competition throughout the calendar year.  The event in Mongolia will feature contests at seven men’s weight categories and six for women and the winners will earn the right to compete in the World Boxing Cup Finals 2024 which are scheduled to take place in Sheffield, England at the end of November 2024.

The announcement that Mongolia will host this event was made during a visit to the country by the President of World Boxing, Boris van der Vorst, who has held a series of meetings with senior representatives of the Mongolian Boxing Federation.

The President of World Boxing, Boris van der Vorst, said: “I am delighted that we will be holding our first World Boxing Cup event in Asia and am very grateful to the Mongolian Boxing Federation for its willingness and to host the competition and its steadfast and on-going support for World Boxing and our work to deliver a better future for the sport.

“The World Boxing Cup in Ulaanbaatar will be a top-class event and my colleagues and I look forward to working closely with the Mongolian Boxing Federation to deliver this important competition in Asia.”

Mayor of the capital city and board member of Mongolian Boxing Federation Mr Nyambaatar Khishgee, added: “We are very proud to bring this exciting new competiton to Mongolia and look forward to working with World Boxing to deliver a fantastic event for our country and all of the boxers that will be taking part.”

The event in Ulaanbaatar will be third World Boxing Cup of 2024 and follows events in Sheffield, England in January and Colorado, USA in April.

World Boxing Cup Finals 2024 to be held in Sheffield as world class international boxing returns to the City

May 30, 2024

The World Boxing Cup end-of-year Finals event for 2024 will be held at English Institute of Sport Sheffield, England from 27-30 November 2024.

The competition, which is being hosted by England Boxing and World Boxing in association with GB Boxing, will be the culmination of the World Boxing Cup series for 2024 when the stage winners and other top-ranked boxers from this year’s events will compete for the World Boxing Cup Trophy.

November’s Finals event will see the World Boxing Cup return to Sheffield after it hosted the first competition of the series in January 2024.  It was followed by the ‘World Boxing Cup: USA Boxing International Invitational’ in Pueblo, Colorado in April 2024. The third event of this year’s series is scheduled to take place in September 2024 and a number of locations are bidding to host it.

The World Boxing Cup is a new international boxing format developed by World Boxing, the international federation which has been established to ensure boxing remains at the heart of the Olympic Movement.

It features contests at 13 weight categories (seven for men and six for women) and allows male and female boxers accrue ranking points over several stages of competition throughout the calendar year.

The World Boxing Cup Finals 2024 will be delivered by England Boxing in association with World Boxing and GB Boxing and is supported by the National Lottery and Sheffield City Council.

World Boxing’s Secretary General, Simon Toulson, explained:  “We are very happy to bring the year-end Finals event back to Sheffield after the success of this January’s ‘World Boxing Cup: GB Open’, which was held in the city and received very positive feedback from the boxers, coaches and National Federations that participated.  World Boxing is committed to delivering a calendar of high quality competition opportunities and we have no doubt that this year’s Finals event in Sheffield will be a great end to the first series of the World Boxing Cup.”

Jerome Pels, Chief Executive, England Boxing, added: “We are thrilled to host yet another event at the home of England Boxing and GB Boxing in Sheffield. The World Boxing Cup in January demonstrated the remarkable achievements possible when stakeholders collaborate effectively. This upcoming tournament will offer fans a fantastic opportunity to witness the superstars of the sport firsthand and provide the boxers with another chance to compete in an elite environment against the world’s best.”

Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are incredibly proud of Sheffield’s sporting credentials and being a city of sport. We have hosted many major sporting events over the years, and we are delighted that the World Boxing Cup Finals will be another.”

GB Boxing’s Chief Executive, Matt Holt, added: “This is great news for the boxers in our squad who will again get the opportunity to compete at home. They all enjoyed competing in the first World Boxing Cup in Sheffield back in January and those that make the Finals will be very much looking forward to having the chance to box at home once more where their family and friends can come to see them in action, in what will definitely be a high-class international competition.”

World Boxing was launched in April 2023 and aims to ensure that boxing remains at the heart of the Olympic movement. On 7 May 2024 it held its first meeting with the IOC which signalled the start of formal collaboration between the two organisations aimed at establishing a pathway for boxing to remain in the Olympic Games.

World Boxing currently has 29 members covering all of the five Continents that compete in international boxing.

Home nation tops the medal table with three golds after five days of top-class action at the World Boxing Cup: USA Boxing International Invitational in Pueblo

April 22, 2024

The final day of action at the ‘World Boxing Cup: USA Boxing International Invitational’ in Pueblo, Colorado saw the home nation finish top of the medal table with three golds for flyweight (51kg), Terry Washington, light-welterweight (63.5kg), Dedrick Crocklem, and light-heavyweight (80kg), Amir Anderson. The latter two were decided by walkovers as their opponents pulled-out through injury.

It meant the USA narrowly pipped Brazil, China and Great Britain, who each won two golds, to the coveted slot at the top of the medal table. Algeria, Australia, Canada and Denmark all finished with one gold medallist.

The two walkovers meant that the final day saw 11 bouts, which included a number of top-class match-ups featuring boxers that have already qualified for this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.

In the men’s light-middleweight division, Denmark’s European Games champion, Nikolai Terteryan, continued his excellent form with a split decision (4:1) victory over the USA’s Keon Davis to add to the gold medal he won at this year’s first World Boxing Cup event in Sheffield in January.

Another intriguing battle took place in the men’s featherweight (57kg) category where Brazil’s Luiz Oliveira and Great Britain’s Owain Harris met in a re-match of their qualification bout from the recent 1st World Qualifying Tournament in Italy. Once again, it was the Brazilian who prevailed with a victory that was much closer than the unanimous verdict indicated.

The women’s competition saw four of the six medals go to China and Great Britain with wins for Yu Wu (50kg), Wen Lu Yang (60kg), Charley Davison (54kg) and Elise Glynn (57kg). Algeria’s sole gold came in the light-welterweight (66kg) category where Paris-bound, Imen Khelif, secured a unanimous victory over Emilie Sonvico of France.

The women’s middleweight (75kg) final saw a face-off between two members of World Boxing’s Athlete Committee, Tammara Thibeault of Canada and Australia’s Caitlin Parker. The pair have boxed each other before and could meet again in this summer’s Olympics, however on this occasion it was the Canadian 2022 world champion, Thibeault, who prevailed with a unanimous win.

The full list of gold medallists includes:

Women’s 50kg: Yu Wu (CHN)

Women’s 54kg: Charley Davison (GBR)

Women’s 57kg: Elise Glynn (GBR)

Women’s 60kg: Wen Lu Yang (CHN)

Women’s 66kg: Imen Khelif (ALG)

Women’s 75kg: Tammara Thibeault (CAN)

Men’s 51kg: Terry Washington (USA)

Men’s 57kg: Luiz Oliveira (BRA)

Men’s 63.5kg: Dedrick Crocklem (USA)

Men’s 71kg: Nikolai Terteryan (DEN)

Home nation dominates with eight gold medals on final day of action at World Boxing Cup: GB Open – Sheffield 2024

January 20, 2024

Credit: Andy Chubb

A pulsating final day of action at the sold-out ‘World Boxing Cup: GB Open – Sheffield 2024’ was brought to a dramatic close with a stunning super-heavyweight contest, which was stopped by the referee after 65 seconds when a spectacular knockdown by Germany’s Nikita Putilov left Norway’s Omar Shiha unable to defend himself.

It was Germany’s only gold medal on a mixed final day for the team which finished with three silvers.

Speaking in the mixed zone after his stunning victory, Putilov said:” It went good for me today. Sorry for my opponent but that’s boxing. I am not sure I have ever done that before.  Maybe as a junior but never at elite level – that was my first stoppage.

“It was a good victory for me and very good for my future.  In Germany I am the number two super-heavyweight.  I hope that shows them that I might be number one. I hope they choose me for the Olympic qualifier in Italy (in March) and I will show my best.”

Putilov’s stoppage was a fitting end to a week of top-class boxing action at the English Institute of Sport which saw the home nation finish on top of the medal table with eight golds.

English boxers won four medals in both the men and women’s categories to cap a triumphant week for the hosts in a tournament that was only the fourth international Olympic-style boxing event to be held in the UK since the London 2012 Olympics.

The last English gold medal went to Ramtin Musah who narrowly defeated his fellow countryman and GB Boxing squad mate, George Crotty, in the light-heavyweight (80kg) final to round-off the tournament.

Musah said: “I could not be happier right now.  It’s hard boxing your teammate because you know each other’s strengths and weaknesses but it’s great to get the win.  I have enjoyed boxing at home this week and I hope this puts me in the frame for selection for the Olympic qualifier.”

The light-heavyweight clash was one of three all English finals on the day.  In the women’s lightweight (60kg) competition Shona Whitwell outpointed Lucy Kings Wheatley while the men’s light-welterweight (63.5kg) match-up saw Patris Mughalzai get the better of Joe Tyers.

Other home nation boxers to win gold included Savannah Stubley at flyweight (50kg), Lauren Mackie at bantamweight (54kg) and Dionne Burman at welterweight (66kg) in the women’s competitions.  For the men, flyweight (51kg) Kiaran MacDonald and heavyweight (92kg), Patrick Brown both topped the podium in their round robin competitions.

English boxers that had to settle for silver included featherweight (57kg), Elise Glynn, who lost out to Maud van der Toorn from the Netherlands, Lewis Richardson who was outpointed by Denmark’s Nikolai Terteryan at light-middleweight and Jack Dryden who was prevented from boxing in his featherweight (57kg) final by a hand-injury and conceded the gold medal to Wales’s Owain Harris by walkover.

The remaining gold medal went to Cindy Ngamba from the IOC’s Refugee team who got the better of Panama’s two-time Olympian Atheyna Bylon in an engaging middleweight (75kg) final of contrasting styles.

Speaking after her medal ceremony, a delighted Ngamba said: “At the moment, I’m just happy that I listened to the team.  The next time when we go to the qualifier, my next competition, I’ll do what needs to be done.

“She (Bylon) is one of the best, an amazing girl, so for me to be able to share a ring with her and handle her shows that I’m getting better each time. I hope that other people enjoy that and that is makes my coaches happy because that is important.”

Looking to the forthcoming Olympic qualifier in Italy in March 2024, she added: “It would mean the world to qualify for myself and for the refugee team.”
