Wales was the most successful team on day four of boxing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with three wins for Owain Harris-Allen, Orlando Holley-Sotomi and Daniel Pitt.
The day’s action saw 28 round of 16 bouts in the men’s lightweight (M60kg), light-middleweight (M70kg) and light-heavyweight (M80kg) categories and the women’s flyweight (W51kg) competition.
The first session of the day began with two flyweight contests that went with form as Canada’s Amber-Jane Wall and Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fyrers secured unanimous 5:0 wins over Ramatu from Ghana Quaye and Zinnat Ferdous of Bangladesh respectively.
It was followed by four bouts in the men’s lightweight category (W60kg), which included a successful first appearance in the competition by Wales’ 2022 bantamweight bronze medallist, Owain Harris-Allan. The Welshman was rarely troubled as he secured a unanimous win over Niven Chembren of Mauritius to set-up a quarter final clash with home favourite, Nicholas Devlin of Scotland.
A much closer affair saw Treasure Moremi of Botswana edge a 3:2 win over Loka Litabe of Lesotho, before the pick of the lightweight bouts pitched the world number five, Sachin Sachin of India, against Will Hewitt of England, who is ranked eighth.
A good first round from Sachin saw the Indian take the lead on four of the scorecards. Hewitt tried to seize the initiative in the second, but Sachin countered cleverly to build-up his advantage and eventually went on to take the bout 4:1 on the cards, despite being docked a point in the final round. He will face Treasure Moremi of Botswana for a medal in Wednesday’s quarter-final
In the light-middleweight (M70kg) competition, there was more disappointment for England as Will’s twin brother, Paddy was defeated 4:1 by Orlando Holley-Sotomi of Wales. The other winners in the morning’s light-middleweight bouts were Lorenso Bonne from the Seychelles, Ghana’s Precious Akai Nettey and Mervin Clair from Mauritius.
The early session concluded with four light-heavyweight match-ups and ended with another ominous performance from Joshua Ofori of Canada whose bout with Fiji’s Aminiasi Saratibau was stopped by the referee in round two, after Ofori had knocked down his opponent three times in the first two rounds. The Canadian will face Desmond Pappoe in the quarter-final on Wednesday, after the Ghanaian’s split decision win over Tonga’s Josh Tonga.
After a disappointing morning session for England in which it lost two from two, the evening began with a sparkling display from 19-year-old, Ruby White who completely overwhelmed her South African opponent in their flyweight (W51kg) clash.
It was one of two wins in the evening session for England, who saw Dimeji Shittu defeat Uganda’s Alfred Ojok in their light-heavyweight (M80kg) contest later in the session.
After winning featherweight gold at Birmingham 2022, Jude Gallagher is looking to become a two-time Commonwealth Games champion in Glasgow, and the Northern Irishman did not disappoint when he entered the competition at lightweight (M60kg) with an impressive unanimous victory over Qudrat Ullah of Pakistan.
For the host nation, it proved to be another mixed day. In the women’s flyweight (W51kg) competition, Scotland’s Brooke Neely lost an agonising 3:2 split decision in a close bout with Nadeeka Ransinghe of Sri Lanka.
But in the men’s light-middleweight (M70kg) competition, Sonny Kerr gave the Scottish fans something to cheer as with a 3:1 victory over Boniface Maina of Kenya to set-up a medal bout against Marion Ah Tong of Somoa in Wednesday’s quarter finals.
At heavyweight (M90kg), Daniel Pitt finished a great day for Wales with a unanimous decision win over Kua Gunua Mua from Papua New Guinea.
