Brazil tops medal table at Grand Prix Ústí nad Labem – World Boxing Challenge

Medals have been distributed after four days of boxing action at the Winter Stadium in Ústí nad Labem, Czechia, with 184 entered boxers whittled down to 19 gold medallists.

Brazil saw the most success, winning six gold medals along with one silver and three bronze, leading the overall table with ten medals.

USA were second best with nine total medals, followed by Japan with eight, while Italy and Canada made up the top five with five medals each. Every National Federation in attendance left with something, with every nation earning at least one bronze medal.

The Grand Prix Ústí nad Labem has been hosted by the Czech Boxing Association for more than half a century and was given World Boxing Challenge status for the second year in a row.

Following the conclusion of the action in Czechia, focus now shifts to the World Boxing Cup—Astana, Kazakhstan 2025, taking place from 30 June – 6 July 2025. The event will take place in the Beeline Arena and is the final major World Boxing competition before the inaugural World Championships in Liverpool, this September.

Grand Prix Ústí nad Labem – World Boxing Challenge begins tomorrow

The Grand Prix Ústí nad Labem has been hosted by the Czech Boxing Association for more than half a century and has been given World Boxing Challenge status for the second year running.

184 boxers from 23 National Federations are ready to battle it out in the competition that runs from 11 – 14 June at the Winter Stadium in Ústí nad Labem, Czechia, with the official draw taking place at 21:00 CEST today (10 June). Preliminary action gets underway from 12:00 CEST tomorrow (11 June).

With the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool just a few months away, this event offers boxers and coaches a chance to make final preparations, given it features the same ten men’s and ten women’s categories.

The following nations have registered athletes for the event: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czechia, England, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Mongolia, Moldova, Norway, Pakistan, Palestine, Sierra Leone, Slovakia, Switzerland, USA and Wales.

Marek Simak, President of the Czech Boxing Association, said: “This year it will be a special moment also for the Czech Boxing Association as we will celebrate 100 years anniversary. Last year’s edition of this top boxing tournament was held for the first time in cooperation with World Boxing as the World Boxing Challenge.

“We are proud that the Grand Prix has been awarded World Boxing Challenge recognition again.”

Following the conclusion of the World Boxing Challenge, attention will turn to the World Boxing Cup—Astana, Kazakhstan 2025, taking place from 30 June – 6 July 2025. The competition will take place in Beeline Arena and is the final major World Boxing competition before the World Championships in Liverpool.

Brazil takes gold at the World Boxing Challenge Tammer Tournament, Tampere 2024

The boxing came to a close yesterday after an exciting weekend of action at the World Boxing Challenge Tammer Tournament, Tampere 2024.

Across the 11 categories, Brazil came away as the most successful nation having won four golds, closely followed by the English with three and the home nation, Finland, with two winners. Notably, the weekend saw Finnish boxer Pihla Kaivo-oja claim her fourth gold in the history of the Tammer Tournament.

Latest World Boxing Challenge sees more than 150 boxers from 16 countries head to the Netherlands for The Eindhoven Box Cup

More than 150 boxers from 16 countries are set to take part in The Eindhoven Box Cup when the action gets underway this weekend at the Van der Valk Hotel in Eindhoven, 18-20 May 2024.

The event is part of the World Boxing Challenge series of competitions and has been organised by the Noble Art of Boxing Foundation in collaboration with the Dutch Boxing Association, World Boxing and NOC*NSF.

Some of the standout names set to compete in the competition include: Misheelt Battumur (Mongolia, bronze world championship), Beatriz Ferreira (Brazil, world champion), Imane Khalif (Algeria), Kan Chia-Wei (Chinese Taipei, Asian champion) and Harry Garside (Australia, bronze medallist at the Tokyo Olympics).

The list of countries taking part in the competition includes: Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Algeria, Canada, Belgium, Brazil, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei.

In addition to the elite competition, The Eindhoven Box Cup will also include bouts between grassroots boxer and aims to provide a platform for boxers at all levels in the Netherlands to compete.

Eleven boxers claim gold in first World Boxing Challenge event at Tampere in Finland

Eleven boxers from five countries won gold medals at the first ever World Boxing Challenge event that took place in Tampere, Finland last weekend (24-26 November 2023).

The event, widely known as The Tammer Tournament, was hosted by the Finnish Boxing Federation in collaboration with World Boxing as part of its new World Boxing Challenge series. 

The World Boxing Challenge is designed to provide a structure to the existing calendar of competitions delivered by National Federations and awards ranking points to boxers based on their performances at these events which count towards their eligibility to compete in the World Boxing Cup and other major tournaments.

The action in Finland, which included five female weight classes and six for men, saw a strong performance from the home nation with Pihla Kaivo-oja (50kg) and Vilma Viitanen (57kg) winning gold in the women’s categories and Ismail Umar (63.5kg) matching them in the men’s.

It was a feat equalled by England and Germany, whose team’s also won three golds each.  The other nations that finished with a boxer on top of the podium were Norway and Wales who saw Sunniva Hofstad (75kg) and Rosie Eccles (66kg) respectively, triumph in their weight classes.
